The vibrant Granville Entertainment District is about to get a major facelift with the City's approval of a new 33-storey hotel. This tower, located at the bustling intersection of Granville and Davie streets, aims to replace older low-rise commercial buildings, including the well-known Tsui Hang Village Seafood Restaurant. Built by Deecorp Properties, this ambitious development is set to provide a much-needed boost to Vancouver’s hotel supply amid growing demand.
A Solution to Vancouver's Hotel Room Shortage
Vancouver's accommodation crisis is well-documented. With tourism booming and occupancy reaching over 90% during peak seasons, the city faces a critical shortage of hotel rooms. The newly approved hotel will feature 464 guest rooms, with thoughtful design elements that cater to both short-term tourists and long-term visitors, such as business travelers in need of extended stays. About 40% of these rooms will be focused on traditional short-term stays, while the remaining 60% will provide spacious designs with amenities for longer visits.
Designed for the Modern Traveler
Kevin McNaney, the project advisor, has shared insights into the unique structure of the hotel. It will operate under two separate brands to accommodate different guests—one for short-term stays and the other for longer ones, which aligns with the evolving needs of today's travelers. Two distinct lobby areas will welcome visitors, positioning this hotel to become a landmark destination.
Enhancing the Street Life and Local Economy
More than just a bed for the night, this hotel will include restaurants, lounges, and bars that will animate the street-level experience. As Gwendal Castellan of Destination Vancouver notes, hotels do more than provide lodging; they stimulate local businesses, enhance street activity, and generate tax revenues that fund local services. In revitalizing the Granville Strip, the hotel not only aims to create a thriving environment during the evening but encourages daytime activities, aligning with the City's vision for a safer and more appealing district.
