Tragedy Strikes Meachen Creek Falls
In a heartbreaking incident over the Labour Day long weekend, three Mexican citizens tragically lost their lives during a hiking excursion at Meachen Creek Falls, southeast of Kimberley, British Columbia. The situation escalated when the RCMP received a GPS SOS indication that hikers had gone over the falls on September 1, 2025.
Search and rescue teams sprang into action, unearthing a grim scene. Initially, the body of a 68-year-old woman was discovered halfway down the waterfall. In the following days, the search yielded the recovery of the bodies of a 35-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man. Recovery efforts are unfortunately still on-going for the latter, as family and community come to terms with this devastating loss.
Preparation and Safety: A Must for Hikers
The RCMP’s response highlighted the significant role that various emergency services, including the RCMP Dog Services, Drone Operations, and local BC Search and Rescue groups, played in the effort. Their coordinated action received appreciation from the deceased's families, showcasing the compassion and dedication of those involved. Such tragedies serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety measures while hiking.
Parks Canada emphasizes on their website how crucial it is for hikers to undertake proper preparation before hitting the trails. This includes not just selecting appropriate routes but also ensuring that they have adequate safety gear, food, water, and inform someone about their plans. Proper footwear and knowledge about the topography can significantly alter outcomes in dire situations.
