Good news hit Canadian families this month as child tax payments from the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) are arriving two days earlier than expected. Normally disbursed on the 20th, this month’s payments come early due to the weekend constraints, landing in bank accounts on Friday, July 18. So, it's time to check those accounts!
The Changing Landscape of the Child Tax Benefit
This month's payments are crucial not just for their timing, but also for the adjustments parents will see. In July last year, the federal government implemented a 4.7% increase, which was aimed at countering the escalating cost of living. Families with kids under six saw their maximum benefit rise from $7,437 to $7,787, while those with older children experienced a bump from $6,275 to $6,570.
This year, the increase won’t be as large but still offers relief, with the Canada Revenue Agency indicating a new 2.7% rise. For the current benefit period, families can expect to see the maximum annual base benefit for children under six increase to $7,997, and for children aged six to 17, to $6,748.

The adjustments made under the indexation process by Ottawa since 2018 have aimed to maintain benefits in line with inflation. This year, families will receive a boost to the Child Disability Benefit as well, enhancing financial support for those who need it most.
